Recreation as Therapy

The online Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Recreational Therapy (RT) as “therapy based on engagement in recreational activities (as sports or music) especially to enhance the functioning, independence, and well-beings of individuals affected with a disabling condition.” However, what does this mean in every day terms? What it means is that a recreational therapist uses recreational activities to not only provide fun things to do, but improve a client’s quality of life through physical, mental, sensory, social, educational and spiritual activities. Recreational therapists work with children and adults with varied abilities, conditions, and illnesses.

We have completed a quick search of our databases in regards to RT and found over 250 articles that include  such subjects as surfing as a means of therapy and the importance of play. A search of our Tools Collection found two tools relating to recreation therapy. The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) is an excellent place to find out what it takes to become a Recreational Therapist and to obtain more information about RT.
