What do you do when the power goes out?

At 10:30 this morning, we lost power to the 8000 block of Corporate Drive. Some of us had our computers on back-up power supplies so we had an extra 15 minutes to save our work. Our servers had 30 minutes before they lost power. The local power company initially gave us a 2-hour window before power could be restored, then changed it to 3:30. We don’t know whether wind gusts or solar flares caused it.

So what do you worry about when you lose power in your home or workplace? How do you prepare? We’ve touched on this once before in an article on emergency preparedness but here are a few reminders:

  • Charge your batteries for any assistive devices including powered wheelchairs.
  • Have at least one “corded” phone that plugs directly into the wall.
  • Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed to retain as much chill as possible, especially if you store medications.
