In July of this year, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Today, the Senate is finally scheduled to vote on CRPD. Through the adoption of the Convention, the US would join over 140 countries in their commitment to protect the rights of people with disabilities, pass laws to improve the quality of lives of people with disabilities, and repeal any laws that could lead to discrimination. Some of the rights of people with disabilities described in the CRPD include:
- Living independently
- Being included in the community
- Personal mobility
- Education
- Health
- Participation in political and public life
- Participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure, and sports
- The right to accessible public transportation
