April 2, 2013 marked the sixth annual World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD). WAAD was adopted on December 18, 2007 by the United Nations General Assembly marking it as only one of four official health-specific United Nations Days. Autism, which affects tens of millions worldwide (and 1 in every 88 American children), is characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. WAAD, which is observed by over 90 countries, inspires all members to raise autism awareness throughout the general public and encourages early diagnosis and intervention. Furthermore, WAAD is a celebration of the distinctive talents and skills of individuals with autism. Using its signature “Light it Up Blue” campaign, WAAD organizers have teamed up with Facebook, athletes, celebrities and even iconic buildings to spread the word.
