Fibromyalgia Awareness Day is May 12th, 2013!

National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day takes place on May 12th, 2013 as part of National Fibromyalgia Awareness Month.  According to the National Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Association (NFMCPA), “Fibromyalgia (pronounced fy-bro-my-AL-ja) is a common and complex chronic pain disorder that affects people physically, mentally, and socially.  Approximately 10 million Americans have fibromyalgia (FM) with a ratio of about 8 to 2, women over men, and it occurs in people of all ages, even children.”  While characterized by pain and fatigue, FM has other symptoms which vary from person to person.

The 2013 theme is C.A.R.E. & Make Fibromyalgia Visible which encourages people to contribute, advocate, participate in research, and educate others about fibromyalgia.  Educating the community is of particular importance, since it is not apparent by looking at someone whether or not they have this invisible condition/disability or how they feel despite “looking so good.”

Events for National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day occur throughout the month of May.  You can locate an event in a state near you or find out about more about international events, as well as more information on Fibromyalgia awareness month through the NFMCPA website.

The National Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Association provides support, education, research, and advocacy for fibromyalgia and chronic pain conditions.  Please visit their website to learn more about Fibromyalgia, overlapping conditions, advocacy, and many other valuable resources.
