On Wednesday, July 9th the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD), the U.S. International Council on Disability (USICD), and the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) are hosting a free informative webinar, “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Current Status Toward Ratification and Why It is Important” from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities or CRPD is an international human rights treaty by the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. Parties to the Convention are required to promote, protect, and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights by persons with disabilities and ensure they enjoy full equality under the law. In 2012, the U.S. Senate considered but rejected the Convention and last year the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations held two hearings to reconsider the treaty.
