The Confederación Salud Mental España (Mental Health Confederation of Spain) is a non-profit and social interest organization founded in 1983. Currently, the Confederation integrates 19 regional federations and provincial associations, which are made up of 300 associations and more than 47,000 members throughout the country. Their mission is to promote the adoption of measures that contribute to improving the quality of life of people with mental disorders and their families, defend their rights and represent the movement created around mental health. The Confederation provides a variety of free services that help provide information and training on mental health. Staff at the Confederation’s Documentation Center answers requests for information, counseling, and training; offers advice individuals, businesses, organizations, and public entities about their rights and responsibilities under applicable laws that affect people with mental health disorders and their families; provide counseling and information to people with mental health disorders, professionals, and public and private organizations on documentation; and develops training for the Spanish federal government and presents this training to people with mental health disorders, their families, and civil rights movement professionals. Member organizations also provide programs on a range of topics of interest to people with mental health disorders, their families, and professionals that include social reintegration for people with mental health disorders who have been incarcerated; employment; dual diagnosis; learning about one’s diagnosis; promotion of mental health and the prevention of exclusion; education; research; leisure activities and free time; and more. The Confederation also publishes a bi-weekly e-bulletin that shares the employment and good practice experiences and exciting initiatives from member organizations, encourages communication within the civil rights movement, and promotes ways to work together to improve the rights and quality of life of people with mental health disorders. They also offer a virtual library, guides, journals, brochures, and Encuentro, a magazine that focuses on different topics.
