For more than 40 years, NARIC’s Information Specialists have collected information about organizations that support people with disabilities, families and caregivers, and the professionals and practitioners they work with every day. Back in the 90s, we published a Directory of National Information Sources and a Guide to Publications as reference guides for the public to find these organizations. Now, we keep it all in our Knowledgebase, a searchable database that includes more than 3,000 records of organizations, agencies, providers, and web sites. We use this database to answer information requests and to curate resource guides and information sheets too.
Within the NIDILRR grantee community, several centers have created similar resource collections. Some were developed to answer a specific need for the audience they support. Other collections have grown out of the experience and knowledge of project staff who interact with their community and have built their own toolboxes to respond to issues or questions that arise. Here are some of the resource collections we tap into:
- National Resource Center for Aging with Disability is a collection of organizations and agencies with programs to help people aging with disabilities live healthier, more enjoyable lives. Maintained by the Investigating Disability factors and promoting Environmental Access for healthy Living Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (IDEAL RRTC).
- Employment Repository is a collection of employment and vocational recovery resources to help people consider, choose, get, and keep employment. In addition to resources for current and potential workers, it includes sections for employers, family members, and providers and administrators. Maintained by the RRTC on Improving Employment Outcomes for Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities.
- Rural Disability Resource Library is a collection of resources for people with disabilities living in rural communities, maintained by the RRTC on Place-Based Solutions to Rural Community Participation, Health, and Employment.
- UAB TBI Information Network offers educational materials developed by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System Center along with resources from the wider TBI community.
