The 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act is this week and commemorative events are happening across the country! The NIDILRR-funded ADA National Network is hosting and participating in events online and in the community. Here are some virtual events you can join:
- 7/24: Celebrate the ADA and demystify disability inclusion with staff from the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes ADA Regional Centers , hosted by Disability:IN Chicagoland and affiliates, at 12pm ET.
- 7/24: Dive into the history of the disability rights movement with the Pacific ADA Regional Center at 4pm ET.
- 7/25: Show off your knowledge of the ADA and disability rights history with the ADA National Network Knowledge Translation Center and the Great Lakes ADA Regional Center at 2pm ET.
- Even more events and archived episodes of webcasts and podcasts from the ADA National Network are available at adaanniversary.org/events/
Many community organizations are hosting ADA celebrations and disability pride events locally. Check out the ADA National Network anniversary events calendar for fairs, parades, cookouts, caravans, art exhibits, and so much more happening through July and beyond!
Are you hosting an ADA Anniversary event? Adaanniversary.org has monthly themes, graphics, social media tools, and more to help put your event front and center. You can even add your event to their calendar!
Share your event announcements through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter (X), and other platforms by including #ADA34, #DisabilityPride, and #ADAAnniversary. Ensure the accessibility of your posts by using CamelCase in your hashtags and including alt text for your images so all of your followers can get the details.
By the way: The actual anniversary date is July 26th. NARIC’s director Mark Odum remembers it well. He was sitting on the White House lawn back in 1990, when President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA into law!
