New Tools from the American Academy of Neurology to Teach High School Coaches and Athletes how to Spot a Sports Concussion Released

On August 31st, 2011 the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) released several new tools as part of their educational campaign on sports-related concussions.  The AAN website now offers two free online safety courses created by the University of Michigan  Neurosport program and endorsed by the AAN to assist high school and youth coaches in recognizing the signs of concussion and what to do if a player gets a head injury during a game.  The free safety courses are 20 minutes in length and a printable certificate is available after passing an online quiz.  Additionally, the AAN website also offers free downloadable Coaches Cards on how to spot concussion and what to do if a player receives one.  Symptoms of concussion include but are not limited to blurry vision; confusion; dizziness; feeling hazy, foggy, or groggy; and headache.  Coaches may also notice behavioral/personality changes, false/imagined memory, loss of consciousness, empty stare, and/or disorientation in their players.  In addition to these online resources the AAN education campaign includes public service announcements to air on radio stations nationwide.  For more information, to learn more on concussion, and to access the AAN Sports Concussion Toolkit please visit www.aan.com/concussion.
