During 2013’s National Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), we have looked at various topics affecting Hispanics with disabilities including NARIC’s Spanish language services, explained how people-first language works, looked at cultural competency of rehab professionals in treating/working with Hispanics/Latinos with spinal cord injury (SCI), celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act, the announcement of the Southeast ADA Center’s new show on BlogTalkRadio, and looked at NIDRR funded projects related to Hispanics with disabilities that deal with access and training for Spanish speaking parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), a toolkit promoting cultural competency for providers working with Latinos with psychiatric disabilities, burn injury at the North Texas Burn Rehabilitation Model System (NTBRM), and health outcomes research, capacity building, and underserved populations with SCI and traumatic brain injury. To close out the month, we will look at one of the traumatic brain injury model systems funded by NIDRR.
The Virginia Commonwealth Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (VCTBIMS) is led by Jeffrey S. Kreutzer, PhD and is based in Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The VCTBIMS examines two interventions: one that focuses solely on survivors and one that focuses on couples. The survivor focused study looks at a structured approach to promote the resilience and adjustment of survivors post injury. The couples focused study examines the benefits of interventions designed for couples after injury. The VCTBIMS also conducts trials, collects data for the National Database, participates in a collaborative module project, and disseminates information through seminars, presentations, publishing in journals, and in collaboration with the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC).
